Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
For
Code Enforcement Personnel

Course Description

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) β€œis a crime prevention philosophy based on the theory that proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, as well as improvement in the quality of life.”

The foundation of CPTED is a concept called defensible space – the proper design of space, so legitimate users can watch over it and be responsible for it. CPTED goes beyond traditional security methods of target hardening, by naturally integrating security measures into the built environment through the following four strategies: Natural Surveillance, Territorial Reinforcement, Access Control, and Maintenance.

Participants will learn through CPTED, new tools for identifying, preventing, and solving local crime problems. They will learn how the design and use of the environment can control human criminal behavior, and where basic CPTED strategies can be applied. Participants will learn how the enforcement of municipal codes can have an impact on CPTED and its outcomes.
